MOTORCYCLE SAFETY

Why Safety Important

While motorcycles are very popular in Thailand, and they have several advantages, these two-wheeled vehicles are not always the easiest or safest to ride, especially in a busy city such as Bangkok. Motorcycle safety is absolutely crucial, and enjoying your motorcycle also means knowing how to ride it properly and what safety precautions to take.

One of the best and wisest things you can do to ensure your motorcycle safety is to take a few motorcycle driving lessons. Riding can be quite simple once you get the hang of it. But when you combine little to no experience, with power, and speed, things can go very wrong very quickly.

It is best to practice with people that have proper experience and in an area with little traffic. This way you will be able to get more practice in as well as build more confidence in your skills before you take on the busy roads of Bangkok. Motorcycle safety goes beyond just learning driving skills, having confidence to ride your bike through this traffic is a major part of motorcycle safety.

A good way to prove you are fit to ride a motorcycle in Bangkok is through securing a Thai motorcycle license. This process can be completed within a week if you have all your documents in order. It might be challenging because of all the administrative work and the language barrier but there are places that assist you with this. During the process your driving skills will be tested as well as your motorcycle safety theory. If you are able to pass this then it means you are one step closer to being ready for these busy roads.

Despite having a motorcycle license or having tons of driving experience, unfortunate events such as an accident can happen very fast and unexpectedly. No one is immune to accidents and to ensure that you are safe at all times you should go back to the basics of cycling safety.

  • Wear a helmet. Just like fastening your seatbelt is important in a car, so is  wearing a helmet on a motorcycle. Even though some Thais ride their motorcycles without a helmet, it’s not motorcycle safety etiquette and is not the right way to go about things, nor is it legal or safe in any way.
  • Respect the road rules. Yes, you’re riding a motorcycle that can split in between cars and through traffic jams. But you should never take any risks that could endanger you, your passenger, or any other drivers. Motorcycle safety should always be your priority. If you are new in Bangkok, it’s rather smart to not try and copy other people that have been driving in Bangkok for years.
  • Inspect your motorcycle. Generally talking, when you rent a motorcycle in Bangkok it is in good condition and you won’t  have anything to worry about. However, just to be extra safe, it’s a good idea to inspect your motorcycle every week or so to see if everything is still in place. This is another good motorcycle safety tip to keep in mind.

If you are a foreigner in Thailand, motorcycle safety is vital. Getting into an accident, whether it is your fault (foreigner) or not, you will be put in the spotlight, and it could cost you much more than anticipated. So the best way to avoid this is to take precautions ahead of time and try your best to adhere to the motorcycle safety guidelines.
